貫穿澳大利亞東北部的珊瑚礁群——大堡礁是世上獨一無二的，擁有無與倫比的動植物資源。自1981年列入聯合國教科文世界自然遺產名錄。但在這令人嘆為觀止的美麗背後，是全球變暖的破壞。自1995年以來，海水的溫度引發珊瑚白化至少5次之多，這是珊瑚礁退化的現象，主要是珊瑚的顏色變弱。因為大堡礁的持續損壞，教科文在一份初步報告中，建議將它列入瀕臨危險的自然遺產名錄；這一建議很可能在下一屆世界文化遺產委員會的會議上獲得通過。對此，澳洲政府想提出異議。
